The 2010 English Hotel Merge was the second planned merge connected to the US-Canada merge and would combine all English speaking hotels. News articles were published on April 7, 2010 explaining the merge. All English speaking hotels would merge into one universal website. On June 2, Habbo Australia merged with the new Habbo.com, becoming the first of the international hotels (besides Canada) to merge in the English Hotel merge.
Overview[]
On April 7, 2010, managers of all English speaking hotels published the following news story (note that this news article is from Habbo Canada; information may be different in each hotel):
“ | Important and exciting news for all Habbos.
As we are inching closer and closer to the big day when Habbo.ca and Habbo.com are united under one Hotel roof, some other exciting news has surfaced! The new Habbo.com will not only be the home of Canadians and Americans, come May, it will also become the home of all our English language Habbo Hotels! In other words, this fantastic new site will be the home of all the English speaking Habbos from our sites in Australia, Canada, Singapore, the United States, Ireland and the United Kingdom. The new, international Habbo.com will give you the opportunity to meet thousands more friends from all over the world, with more competitions, more events and even more shenanigans than ever before! That's not all though, as the "flagship" site, Habbo.com will get all the new features before anyone else. Habbo.ca and Habbo.com will still be united in April as planned, so that gives you some time to settle in and get ready to greet the world in May! We know you will have plenty of questions about this, but please rest assured that we are planning very carefully. We're looking forward to giving you more news on this exciting development on the week of April 12, so remember to check back! The article basically summarizes that all English speaking hotels will come together to form one hotel. |

The Merge[]
Less than a month after Canada and US merged, Habbo Australia joined.
A couple of days later, Singapore merged with Habbo.com on June 4th.
The AU, NZ, SG, MY and PH flag badges have been mistaken by a few Habbos to have been received for the merge, but some Australian or Singaporean hotel players may have flag badges from joining either the NZ, AU, SG, MY or PH groups before the merge. These players may have been randomly selected to receive the badge (with the flag on it, depending on what group was joined, in which hotel.), but every player from the hotels who merged also received their Hotel View badge as a merge badge.
Habbo UK merged with Habbo.com on June 10, the final hotel to merge.
Whilst furniture and player data transfer was instant during these merges, groups took a while to transfer over.
Merge Badges[]
After the merge, badges were given to players to symbolize their home-hotels.
MRG01 - Habbo Canada - Remembering my Habbo roots!
MRG02 - Habbo USA - Remembering my Habbo roots!
MRG03 - Habbo UK - Remembering my Habbo roots!
MRG04 - Habbo Australia - Remembering my Habbo roots!
MRG05 - Habbo Singapore - Remembering my Habbo roots!
Other Badges[]
A badge was also given to all users of the new English hotel to symbolize the new friendships between each country.
MRG000 - Friendship Bracelet - A stranger is a friend you have yet to meet!
Merge furniture[]
(See main article: Merge Compensation Rares).
Many of the rare values went down due to different values in different hotels. To counteract this, Habbo gave gifts to make up for the lost value. The gifts included strange boxes, variants of carp statues, and a submarine. All users, at the very least, received a Travel Trunk to commemorate the merger.
Criticisms of the 2010 Merge[]
Since the announcement of both the 2010 US-Canada Merge and 2010 English Hotel Merge, there has been much criticism by the communities of the affected hotels.
April Fools Day controversy[]
When Habbo first announced the merge, they stated the it would happen "in Early April"[1]. The date of the merge itself sparked major controversy. Many players thought "Early April" meant April 1, thus making the merge an April Fools joke set up by Habbo. One piece of evidence that supported this theory was that news of the merge was not published on the official Sulake website. Some players supported this, but many thought it was not a joke. The fact that Habbo has spent over 5 months planning the merge suggested the merge was not a joke.
As the date of the merge came closer, many players started to realize it was really happening. The merge eventually happened on May 6, 2010.
Username clashes[]
Since players from different hotels may have the same username as one other, username clashes were one of the main concerns. Active Habbo players were most likely to keep their username according to staff as many of the clashes coincided with inactive accounts, however, if two active players clashed, the less active would be required to change their username. Habbo players who needed to change their username were notified in advance before the merge.
Staff also checked to see if it's possible to merge Habbo accounts together if a player owned the same name in each hotel. The friends list, achievements, badges, furniture, and credits would be combined together whilst achievements on one account that are of the highest level than the other will most likely be kept.
On April 13, players whose name had to be changed received a symbol (& for CA Habbos, $ for US, # for UK, ^ for AU, or * for SG) at the end of their name. In order to get rid of it, they had to go to one of their rooms and change it.
Group names that clashed had their URLs reset and had to pick a new URL.
It was announced on April 22, that Habbo players on merging accounts could link accounts together using Habbo ID.
Furni-Economic Impact[]
"Many Habbos complain about furni values and are worried that the merge will significantly affect values and the overall "economy". The merge will have a very little impact on furni values, but some items' values will indefinitely crash." - Original Article
Habbo suffered a huge loss in the value of many rares and the surpeme Habbo Club Sofa (a.k.a. HCS). Before the merge, as a secondary currency for the furniture economy, HCSs, were usually valued at around 6c or 7c. After the merge, the value fell in a matter of days, until the value of the sofa finally stopped at around 2c.
HCSs are no longer a major second currency of Habbo.com. Offers for buying and selling HCSs have ceased to fill trade rooms and room lists.
The values of most furniture greatly changed as different hotels valued different rares. To combat this loss, Habbo introduced merge compensation rares.
Banned accounts[]
Banned accounts were to stay banned when the merge came, they confirmed this in the merge FAQs
Lag[]
Lags would not be much of a problem once the merge comes. People in different time zones would play at different times so the lag problem wouldn't occur.
Fighting/ Harassment[]
Because the new, merged community includes people from different parts of the world, Habbo players were believed to be prone to harassment regarding their race, nationality, or ethics. Staff were highly aware of upcoming harassment issues and issued more moderators to patrol the hotel.
When the merge came, Habbos were given a badge to symbolize which hotel they are originally from. (habbo.ca, habbo.com, habbo.com.au, habbo.co.uk)
On the day of the merge, there was an increased amount of hate between players from different communities however eventually the harassment has stabilized and today most players navigate the hotel without any trouble.
Schedule Changes[]
The date of the US-Canada merge was pushed back many times, and this caused a negative impact on the community. The merge was scheduled for early April, but the date was pushed back to mid-April, then to the last week of April. The US-Canada merge finally occurred on May 6, and the first portion Habbo UK merged on June 2.
What will happen to my..?[]
To combat a lot of questions players had, Habbo released a list of changes that would or wouldn't happen - most players were understandably concerned about their items and achievements.
- Furniture and rooms would stay the same.
- Badges and achievements stayed the same.
- Habbos' friends lists were not affected.
- Pets would stay the same.
- Trophies would stay the same.
- Photographs will disappear as there is no way of making old pictures work in the new client.
- Group names and URLs would maybe clash and the owners of clashing groups may be asked to change the URL.
- Stickers, notes, and backgrounds on Habbo Homes will stay the same.
- Groups would stay the same.
- Trax songs would stay the same and can still be played.
The Worldwide Merge Rumor[]
In early July 2010, rumors on discussion forums and fansites were circulated about an alleged worldwide merge, where all international non-English-speaking hotels would merge with Habbo.com. However, days after the rumors started, they were proven to be false and Sulake would not merge other hotels with Habbo.com. [2]
